Certain items can be taken “to go” to be automatically used when the player runs out of health. Players can also enter Subspace areas which act as bonus areas where extra coins can be earned. During co-operative play, players can revive fallen comrades at the cost of some money, give each other health or money, and simultaneously taunt for a combined attack. Various cheat codes unlock extra features, such as a Sound Test, a Boss Rush and a Survival Horror mode.

Much to my satisfaction, I did not find this to be the case. If anything, I would argue that I had even more fun playing it now on my Nintendo Switch than I did when I first played it in 2010. I say this for multiple reasons, one of the main ones being the pure nostalgia I felt from the moment I saw the bright orange loading screen and heard the iconic soundtrack, to the moment I defeated the final boss Gideon in level 13 and saw Scott finally victorious in his conquest of Ramona’s Exes. I felt as though I was back in my old neighborhood in my friend’s room, consuming way too many cool ranch Doritos and grape sodas on a school night. And after the last year, I must say that this was a very welcome throwback.

Toward the end of my demo, I followed a quest that led to a slicing tech upgrade that unlocked a harder version of the minigame with more symbols.

It’s a tense situation but, much to the advantage of rogues like Vess, it’s also a chance to make a bit of cash if you play your cards right.
