Across cultures and languages accents (e’erybody speaks English) “you’re rat food now” uttered to a dead zeke is the only real thing that binds this world together. And while there are videos to watch and backstories to read in the character screen to get a sense of who they are, you’re never really invited to care because you know you’re only on the ride with them for four short missions, then onto the next group of four characters in the next episode. You don’t even unlock the “intro” videos for the character until after you’ve completed a level on them, even further removing you from having a care to give about their backstory.
Is World War Z as good as Left 4 Dead? No. Is it fun despite that? Yes. There’s few pleasures in gaming that can compare to swinging a thrumming chainsaw blade through a horde of ravenous undead, and World War Z delivers. And really, it’s not like Valve makes games anymore.
The game is a co-operative third-person shooter in which four players fight against massive hordes of zombies in seven locations, including New York, Jerusalem, Moscow, Tokyo, Marseille, Rome and Kamchatka. Each location, or episode as it is known in-game, is divided into 3-5 individual levels. After completing a level, players receive “supplies” based on a resulting defeat or victory. Supplies can be used to upgrade weapons and unlock new attachments. Perks can be bought for specific classes using supplies.

In the top of the first inning, after Shohei Ohtani’s leadoff walk, Freddie Freeman hit a two-run home run, tying a record by homering in his fifth straight World Series game going back to the 2021 World Series, where he appeared as a member of the Atlanta Braves. In the top of the third inning, Tommy Edman led off with a walk, advanced on a groundout and then scored on a single by Mookie Betts. The Dodgers threatened again in the fourth with runners at first and third and no outs, but the rally was thwarted when Gavin Lux was tagged out on a close play at home on an attempted squeeze bunt by Edman. In the bottom half of the inning, Giancarlo Stanton doubled and tried to score on Anthony Volpe’s single, but he was also cut down at the plate via an accurate throw by left fielder Teoscar Hernandez to keep the Yankees off the board.
Thirty-six years after a gimpy Kirk Gibson limped to the plate to smack a Game 1 walk-off homer, Freddie Freeman came to the plate on a badly injured right ankle with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th and belted the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history to send the Dodgers to an electrifying 6-3 victory over the Yankees on Friday night at a sold-out Dodger Stadium.
Against loaded lineups, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole and Dodgers trade acquisition Jack Flaherty — both of whom grew up rooting for the teams they now suit up for — managed to mount a rare starting pitchers’ duel in the midst of an especially bullpen-oriented October.
The flagship radio stations for both teams also produced local broadcasts of each game. In Los Angeles, KLAC and KTNQ broadcast in English and Spanish respectively, while in New York, WFAN (in English) and WADO (in Spanish) aired the games. The series marked the last broadcasts for longtime Yankees radio play-by-play announcer John Sterling of WFAN, as he had announced his retirement in April 2024.
The Philadelphia Phillies became the first team knocked out of the divisional round when the Mets closed out Game 4 at Citi Field to upset Philadelphia. Meanwhile, in the American League, the New York Yankees advanced to the ALCS, where they beat a Cleveland Guardians team fresh off an ALDS Game 5 win over the Tigers.
