Chrono Trigger is widely regarded as the greatest RPG of all time, and for good reason. What begins as a typical “day-in-the-life” adventure, quickly spirals into a sprawling, epoch jumping romp that is equally exhilarating and endearing. Created by a “dream team” at Squaresoft including Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, and character designs by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, Chrono Trigger’s pedigree was only outshined by its universal praise upon its release in the spring of 1995. Even at the twilight of the SNES’ lifespan, Chrono Trigger’s branching narrative, colorful characters and unforgettable soundtrack were more than enough to earn it a place on our list in this timeline or any other. – Zach Ryan
In a genre as old as the Metroidvania, it’s rare for a game to breathe fresh life into it as much as Hollow Knight did. Its winding subterranean halls are deeper than you’d expect in just about every way you can imagine – from its impressive size and scope, to its comprehensive but delicately told story and lore, to its innumerable upgrades and secrets to uncover. It’s easy to get lost in its caves, or at least lose track of time while exploring them – but once you find your footing you’ll be more than glad you did, because they’re home to one of the best games this genre has ever produced. – Tom Marks (Read Our Review)
Hardest game in the world
Some may be surprised to see Sekiro not included in games listed in the number three spot. The truth is, while Sekiro is also a FromSoftware release, it’s not a ‘Souls’ game. While it shares many similarities with Dark Souls, Elden Ring, etc, this is a hard-as-nails single-player-only adventure. In a Souls game, you can summon allies to help you take down a difficult boss, essentially letting them share the load. However, in Sekiro, players either “git good” or they die trying – many times.
Flappy Bird became infamous for its addictive gameplay, so much so its creator removed it from various app stores, sparking a wave of imitators. This only contributed to its legend, and now the simple game has become widely regarded as one of the most punishing.
“Elden Ring” is highly intuitive, not as hard as other Soulsborne games to pick up, and I think might be one of the best (and hardest) video games ever made. I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who wants a challenge in their lives, having a challenge like this is very fun to play through. “Elden Ring” can be bought for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
If we were counting user-created levels, “Geometry Dash” would be a contender for the top spot on our list. But even the base game of this musical platform runner makes us want to dash our heads against something! Each level propels you through a brightly colored, musical platforming gauntlet and if you hit something, you die and have to start over. While you only use one button to jump, various portals can switch up elements of the environment, which can either help you, or leave you more confused and frustrated. Practice makes perfect, but you’ll have to practice a lot to get anywhere close to perfect in “Geometry Dash.”
We talked about finding areas on the map where blue balls don’t reach. This is a valuable strategy, but there are some levels that actually have designated checkpoints. These checkpoints allow you to restart at them once you die instead of having to start the level over from the beginning. Not only do they save your progress, but they also offer you a chance to catch your breath and figure out how to solve the next portion of the level.
We’ll never get over how hard this game is! “Getting Over It” is simple, if bizarre, in concept – you’re a dude stuck in a pot trying to get up a mountain using a sledgehammer. But this is made monumentally difficult by the intentionally unintuitive controls and the fact that if you fall down you have to start all over again – no checkpoints! The sheer infuriating rage this game induces is remarkable, as hours of progress can be undone in an instant! And Bennett Foddy’s running philosophical commentary certainly doesn’t help, either. Honestly, it’s probably more fun watching people play “Getting Over It” than it is to play it – if only for the schadenfreude!
Open world star wars game
STAR WARS OUTLAWS is a fantastic world to visit with complex locations teeming with life, the fun of exploring the galaxy with blaster in hand or in the cockpit of your starfighter is one that kept me smiling all the way through.
You can make a few story choices throughout the main story which shapes how the narrative unfolds which is pretty cool, but I didn’t find myself sitting there pondering what if supported these bad guys instead of those bad guys.
Kay Vess, her merqaal companion Nix must travel across these worlds securing work with the shady cartels that inhabit the dark shadow cast by the Galactic Empire, meeting new and familiar faces from the greater Star Wars universe.
Universal accessibility settings are one of my absolute favourite new design features in modern games and proved essential for smoothing out one of the most frustrating parts of this game, lockpicking.
