• Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit the fifth set of back-to-back homers in Yankees World Series history in the first inning of Game 5. The Yankees are the first team in World Series history to hit multiple home runs in the first inning of a game when facing elimination. With the Dodgers in Game 2, this was the first time there were multiple sets of back-to-back home runs in a single World Series.
That was Stanton’s second home run of the World Series and his seventh of the postseason. Prior to the first pitch, the Dodgers had two of their World Series MVPs — Steve Yeager (1981) and Orel Hershiser (1988) — honor Valenzuela’s memory by placing a ball on the mound, below where his No. 34 had been painted.
Starter Framber Valdez, who had been so impactful in helping Houston overcome the American League Championship Series absence of staff ace Lance McCullers Jr., also made a third-inning exit, but for an entirely different reason.
