Game 3 world series
The playoffs began with Blake Treinen rescuing a wobbly Dodgers bullpen, the 36-year-old right-hander replacing Michael Kopech and escaping a two-on, one-out eighth-inning jam and throwing 39 pitches for a five-out save in the National League Division Series opener against the San Diego Padres.
In all best-of-seven postseason series, teams taking a 3-0 lead have gone on to win the series 39 of 40 times (98%), including 31 sweeps. Just two teams down 3-0 have even forced a Game 7: The 2020 Astros, who lost to the Rays in the ALCS, and the 2004 Red Sox, who famously beat the Yankees in the ALCS.
I mean, duh. The guy’s left shoulder popped out of its socket in Game 2 — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed it had to be put in place after Ohtani exited the game — and his swings looked uncomfortable in Game 3. He held his jersey while running the bases to make sure he didn’t make it in a way that would make things worse!

Yamamoto had a commanding performance across 6.1 innings, allowing just one hit (home run via Juan Soto) and recording four strikeouts. However, Shohei Ohtani suffered a partially dislocated left shoulder after he landed awkwardly on an attempt to steal second base in the last play of the bottom of the seventh inning.
“The playoffs, or big games, has kind of always been the only thing I really cared about,” Buehler said in his postgame interview with FOX. “I was kind of awful all year, and I think once you get to the playoffs, the adrenaline, the momentum — I think whatever fear I had about my elbow or trying to throw a certain pitch or whatever kind of goes away because it’s now. Game 2 world series
• Freeman joined Jackson, for the A’s and Yankees, as the only players to homer in consecutive World Series games for multiple teams. The only other players with multiple World Series homers for multiple teams are Corey Seager (LAD, TEX), Dave Henderson (BOS, OAK), Lenny Dykstra (PHI, NYM) and Reggie Smith (BOS, LAD).
Through four postseason starts Kelly has a 2.25 ERA, and he’s averaging six innings per start. In three of his four starts he allowed no more than one run, and, in Game 2, he became the first starter to complete seven innings in a World Series game since Stephen Strasburg and Gerrit Cole in 2019. Given the stakes, it’s fair to say Game 2 was the biggest start of Kelly’s career. He rose to the occasion and turned in one of the best World Series pitching performances in recent memory.
Anyway, even with reduced velocity and swing-and-miss-ability, Montgomery held the D-backs to just those two runs through six innings. Manager Bruce Bochy got a little greedy though. He sent Montgomery back out for the seventh inning and, two batters later, the D-backs stretched their lead to 3-0. Montgomery was charged with a fourth run later in the inning.
Los Angeles took a 2-0 Series lead for the first time since 1988, when Kirk Gibson’s walk-off homer against Oakland’s Dennis Eckersley won the opener and Orel Hershiser followed with a three-hit shutout. The Yankees are 0-2 for the first time since 2001, when they rebounded to win three straight at home and lost Games 6 and 7 at Arizona.
Montgomery was missing nearly 2 mph off his sinker and curveball, his two best pitches, and he didn’t get a swing and miss until his 50th pitch. The D-backs strung together four straight hard-hit balls to score two runs in the fourth inning. Gabriel Moreno went deep, Josh Jung made a stellar play to rob Christian Walker, Tommy Pham doubled, then Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled him in.
